This blog is an attempt to point you in the direction of art that I find interesting, feel free to disagree or make suggestions:
Robin Banks - pun intended - or 'banksy' as he signs his work is the UK's leading stencil based graffiti artist. Originating on the streets of Bristol his work can now be seen peppered around London. Dalston, Hoxton, and Notting Hill have all benefited from his unique blend of "brandalism", as he likes to call it... info link.

Three years to plan, two weeks to execute - a ritual stripping away of his identity in the name of art. In February 2001, in an act reminiscent to the K Foundations burning of 1 million pounds (see below) artist Michael Landy systematically destroyed everything he owned in the name of art. For his installation artwork, Breakdown, he spent a fortnight in the window of the old C&A shop in London's Oxford Street destroying all his worldly possessions... info link.

Now this is what I call large scale land art. Australian artist Peter Anderson took a year to complete this massive head and shoulders image that spans 4.3 million-square-metres. It's larger than the four-kilometre-long figure Marree Man, which appeared three years ago. Anderson, who paints under the name of Ando, created Eldee Man from a sketch without using navigational satellite aids... info link.

In 1998 the performance group Blast Theory launched a lottery in which the winners had the chance to be kidnapped. Ten finalists around England and Wales were chosen at random and put under surveillance. Two winners were then snatched in broad daylight and taken to a secret location where they were held for 48 hours. The whole process was broadcast live onto the internet. Online visitors were able to control the video camera inside the safehouse and communicate live with the kidnappers... info link

Sex and football in space were just two of the topics explored by the Association of Autonomous Astronauts. On April 23rd 2000 - marking the end of their five year plan - the AAA spontaneously dissolved itself in order to initiate a new phase of self-historification. Although the official website is now defunct the myth of Adam Palfrey's Clone Jesus project lives on. "The Second Coming Project is a not-for-profit organization devoted to bringing about the Second Coming of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, as prophesied in the Bible, in time for the 2,000th anniversary of his birth. Our intention is to clone Jesus, utilizing techniques pioneered at the Roslin Institute in Scotland"... clonejesus.com archive.

England's crop circle makers have been enriching the British landscape for the past twenty five years, creating belief systems for other people to inhabit. Ok, I admit it, this is one of my own projects, but if I don't find my own work interesting then how can I expect other people to!.. circlemakers.org.

Difficult to sum up in a paragraph, but there's never a dull moment to be had with Drummond and Cauty and their various guises, be it the KLF, K Foundation, X$X, K2 Plant Hire, etc. Their - alleged - burning of one million pounds has to be one of the great works of art of the twentieth century, although it seems to have passed many people by. The act has been enshrined in the book "K Foundation: Burn A Million Quid" by their long time partner in grime Gimpo... KLF info | Drummond info | Cauty info.

Dead good art: "We, the First Committee of the International Necronautical Society, declare the following:-
1.That death is a type of space, which we intend to map, enter, colonise and, eventually, inhabit.
2. That there is no beauty without death, its immanence. We shall sing death's beauty - that is, beauty".... info link.

Bow down to the genius of the Surveillance Camera Players who are a NY based collective that perform specially adapted plays in front on surveillance cameras. "Only someone completely distrustful of all government would be opposed to what we are doing with surveillance cameras." NYC Police Commissioner Howard Safir. First up is Johan Grimonprez and his stunningly grusome film "Dial H-I-S-T-R-O-R-Y" which examines the history of planejacking with the help of a 70's disco soundtrack and extracts from Don DeLillo novels such as "artists have disappeared from the radar screen, having lost the air to terrorists who still have a grip on reality." I couldn't agree more... info link.
